THE LOUNGE / Re: Is anyone else gonna take the plunge?
« on: August 24, 2020, 08:06:59 AM »
I got selected at the end of July to participate in the "closed beta".  My system motherboard is a 7 year old ASUS Z87 with an i7-4790K processor and 32gig of RAM.  With the Corsair water cooling system on the processor I can overclock the processor to 4.7Ghz.  Video card is only a couple years old .... GEForce 1080GTX 8gig EVGA card.

I was surprised that it ran the sim pretty smoothly between the mid and ULTRA settings even with the 3 monitor 5850x1200 resolution.  However, I can foresee an upgrade to get it where it needs to be.  I was gone to Boston last week to visit my son and his family and to meet my new granddaughter who was born July 7th.  When we returned the Beta had expired with the official release on Aug 18th.  After about 4 days of hem hawing around, I pulled the trigger and purchased it Saturday.  Having been around flight simulation since the first issue by Sublogic I figured why stop now.   ::)

Since am no longer bound to the beta Non-disclosure Agreement, here are some 1st impressions:

- A good internet connection will be needed ... initial install is a little over 95 gigs.
- Installs thru the Microsoft Store as an app, so you will need a Microsoft Live account.  Install is a little clunky.  It popped up a window and said it could not find a "registered device" to install on with the only button being cancel.  Hit that and it goes back to the Microsoft Store and indicates it is installed.  Saw some forum posts later that indicated their is an option to install in a custom location which might be something to look at.  The default install puts files in unusual locations ... ie %appdata%
- Took me 4 hours to unmap the controls the program guessed I would use with my controllers and to find / map the ones I needed for basic functionality.
- There is no built in screenshot key at the moment ... so the Windows Key + Print Screen key will save a shot to your pictures folder.
- Pete Dowson has released a beta version of FSUIPC7 that runs as a separate exe .... not an embedded dll within the sim.  I tested it and found the same issues others in the MSFS forums found .... it turns the sim into a slide show.  From the forum posts I've read, seems the SDK that developers need is not complete.  There was also a reference to an update on Aug 27th that might fix it.

- This last one is an assumption on my part in which I hope is totally incorrect.  I don't think you will see the "freeware" options that were with the FS9/FSX/P3d products.  The program menu has a "store" function in it .... presumably for installing aircraft , scenery, and add ons.  It gives me the impression that they have adopted the Apple model of requiring everything to be run thru their store.  Maybe how their business model expects to generate revenue ... taking a cut from everybody who develops something for the product ... (again conjuncture on my part).   Liveries maybe different, as there is a site:  https://www.msfsaddons.org/ that is offering liveries and the convoluted method of installing them.  Right now there are only 3 jet airliners .... A320, 747-8i, 787-10

Although not a big Airbus fan, that A340 paint is Putting on the Ritz.   8)

I thought the same about Greenland.  Had some pretty wicked winds the day I went thru there.

Ran the EXTRM 4 flight today from WABB to Wamena  (WAVV or WAJW) depending on your sim.  Used the freshly painted X-Crafts E175.  Many thanks to Pam Brooker for the templates, tips, and techniques.  Got a long way to go on learning this painting stuff.  Did get an added bonus .... I may have created some new 4 letter "colorful metaphors" during the process.   :o

On the Ramp at WABB.  An interesting field in its' on right.

Climbing out of WABB.

On Final into Wamena.  The natural scenery is what this event is all about!

Bit of a crosswind, but got her down in one piece.

A lot of those "by the sea" airports create some challenging approaches with the shifting and gusting winds.  Good job as we did not receive any passenger complaints!  8)

Nice looking paint job !

I have their ERJ 175 that I am trying to put the TWA "what-if" paint scheme on.  It's slow going and currently working on trying to get that globe detail on the tail.  Hope to be able to use it on some of the Challenge airport destinations.

Eating my own words with a rain soaked, low visibility, Potomac river run approach into RWY 19 at KDCA:

Shake off those Stir Crazy Pandemic Blues by posting some screenshots of your Spring Challenge 2020 flights here in this thread!  You never know who's spirit you  might lift with just a little bit of sharing.   ;)

Used the Twin Otter for the EXTRM 14 flight into the shortest commercial airport in the world, TNCS.  Its' excellent STOL capabilities ensures it will be doing quite a bit of duty in this series!  These are from a very short flight from TNCM-TNCS ... 24 nm.  You can see your destination just about the time you turn to a heading of 190 after lift off.

"A lot of swirling crosswind is generated by the rising topology of the island.  Took two attempts, but managed to finally get the speed, trim, and flap settings to handle the swirl:"

"Who in the right mind puts a fence on the approach to the shortest commercial field ?:"

"Throttles back, floating her in.  The Twin Otter can stop on a dime with very effective prop thrust reverse and generous brakes.
Only had 2 of the 11 passengers complain about whiplash.  That's a winner in my book."   ;)

That last thing you did Brian got it running on both of my computers now using the https://www.fly-twva.com setting.  Guess I need to go change my Ozark kACARS profile to use the https://www.ozarkva.net setting.   8)

Mucho Gracious for the fix , sir !

Fabulous!
I really think that "What If" livery looks good on any bird, hands down.

From what I've seen, the scenery will be provided over the internet from a combination of Bing maps and "other" resources, (NASA?).  It will cache frequently traveled areas, but supposedly the entire world will have that level of detail.

However, unless they've been holed up somewhere and created some type of Magical Mystery Tour graphics engine, rendering that kind of detailed resolution means a $$$$$ video card in my eyes.

I've started a Christmas Club account to start saving for whatever hardware it's going to take to run this puppy.   ;D
I've been doing flight simulation since 1983 .... can't wait to take this for a spin.

Good looking bird !!  I really like the "what-if" livery.

Couple of questions:
  - What painting program do you use ?
  - Are you using a Font for the fuselage letters, (the big Trans World)?

One of the cons about using X-plane is the lack of liveries for the few aircraft it has available.  I've watched some youtube tutorials and may try to start doing some for it if I can grasp the concepts.
