THE LOUNGE / Some Aviation Trivia --
« on: December 26, 2019, 04:03:35 AM »
First, happy holidays to all.

Second - attached is a short file I wrote several years ago for the Washington DC Chapter of the Tailhook Association. At the time I was assigned to the Aircraft Carrier Programs Section of the Navy (OPNAV) Staff in the Pentagon. I was surprised to find out how many aviation personnel actually did not know the specifics of these terms.

Hope you find this "illuminating"

This is the latest release of the FeelThere payware ERJ-170 for FSX and P3D.

I used the freeware download texture from our hangar site as a model, though none of the textures can be used in the Ffeelthere paintkit, which is a layered Photoshop set of files and rather involved.

I am no expert but gradually learning, and I think this turned out pretty well, but a LOT of work went into it.

Scene at Bangor, Maine (KBGR), one of my favorite departure / arrival points.

Screenshot not great, I need to learn a little about posing /size etc.

God be with you, Bruce!  The new VA process will help you immensely.

Thinking of your problems, mine seem relatively small

That looks super nice Mike!

Does it have a 2D panel or just VC only? Post a pic of it if it does please.

Brian
No 2d main panel, which I know many people object to.

Over time I have learned to adjust to them, learning to build custom "camera views" and adapt. It does take some patience, but in the end, I admit they are as good as 2D and better in some ways.

Seems some interest in the 737-20, though apparently TWA never had any.

I am getting better with PhotoShop and Paint kits. I own the Captain Sim 737-200 for P3D4 and tried my hand. here are the results. A fine airplane for a decent price IMHO.

THE LOUNGE / Back in the saddle - long hospital stay
« on: October 14, 2019, 04:08:25 AM »
I am finally at home and somewhat functional after nearly a month of intense hospitalization.

I am nearly 77, and had my left knee replaced in 2015. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the replacement got infected and I was in serious trouble when I realized I needed to go to an emergency room. Lost a lot of blood, seriously septic, in ICU for 2 weeks, 11 transfusions, heavy antibiotics etc.

My total recovery will take a few more weeks. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by my inability to file weekly summaries.

Apparently TWA did have at least one 737-200, but I believe it was a Boeing trial sales pitch. The particular plane  actually became a SWA 737 but registered with a TWA R/N and does not show as ever being registered to TWA. It was scrapped at El Paso in 2013. Here is a picture of the real thing, TWA and SWA:(see attached; I have yet to figure out how to post a picture within a post!)

Boeing 737-2H4(A) N732TW
CN 22731
MSN 22731

In addition, perhaps a TWA Express linkup with one or more -200 operators might have existed for a short period??

Captain Sim makes an excellent 737-200 for FSX and is relatively cheap. It is similar quality to their 707 and 727, which, IMHO, are superb in all respects.

The Lockheed C-69 did fly some BAL missions. However, by that timeframe they were all likely to be unpainted aluminum with markings.

The C-69 originally entered service in late 1944 after many engine and other problems, and only 13 of an order for 22 were delivered as such, the remainder delivered to airlines (including TWA) as L-049s at the end of the war. These differed from the L-049A primarily in having "eyebrow windows" over the cockpit and 1-stage superchargers.

The USAAF C-69s were initially painted in OD over grey. I liked the scheme, but few pictures can be found except for the prototype, emblazoned with Lockheed insignia and a civil registration number. That prototype, contract number 43-10309, later did enter operational service.

After some investigation of USAAF painting regs, I concluded that it likely carried a "ship number"  310309 on the tail, and a squadron hull number 01.

I used the freeware CalClassic FS2004/FSX TWA L-049 Constellation and some busy Photoshop work to produce my "imaginary" C-69 for the BAL mission.

The original C-69s had only a 1-stage supercharger. They later were all upgraded.
See attached image.  Now, to go fly it!

The texture can be found here -

http://www.fsxaddons.com/addons/detail/fsx-douglas-c-47-the-berlin-train-repaint/719/

Depending on which  C-47 Jahn version you have, make sure the sim= line in the aircraft.cfg file is correct; the download fltsim.xx section reflects an early version, I have the latest upgrade. The texture should work in any version of Jahn's model if the aircraft.cfg {FLTSIM.xx} section is set up correctly

BAL009 flown using the magnificent freeware C-47 by Manfred Jahn. The VC and accuracy of this entire package exceeds most payware planes of any type.

This texture is an extra download to the basic file. C-47s flew much needed supplies to West Berliners every 3 minutes for 11 months.  The repaint is based on an original aircraft in a WWII museum in Berlin at Tempelhof  Airport.

See the attached photos; the VC cockpit (no 2-d main panel) has a fluorescent lighting option as shown in the last picture.
